Stay near your minion wave to block Vel'Koz's Q — his primary poke stops at the first enemy hit, making minions an effective shield against his most frequent harassment tool.
Basic Lane Phase
Save one hard CC ability to interrupt Vel'Koz's R channel — stopping his ultimate completely nullifies his highest damage output and puts it on a long cooldown (80-100 seconds).
Team Fight
Note that roots don't interrupt Vel'Koz's ultimate — you need stuns, knockups, silences, or other hard CC that prevents casting to stop the channel.
Team Fight
Engage on Vel'Koz when his E (knockup) is on cooldown — without this CC ability, he has no reliable way to create distance between you and becomes significantly more vulnerable.
Lane Phase Skirmish
Fight Vel'Koz in open areas rather than jungle corridors or river entrances — his Q, W, and R are much harder to dodge in narrow spaces where his geometry-based attacks excel.
Team Fight Late Game
Consider purchasing early Boots of Speed against Vel'Koz — the added mobility makes dodging his skill shots significantly easier during the lane phase.
