Ryze is extremely weak in the early game and needs time to scale. Avoid forcing 2v2 skirmishes around mid unless you have a strong early game champion, as Ryze won't provide meaningful damage before his first major item.
Basic Lane Phase
When ganking for Ryze, wait for him to apply his E (Spell Flux) before engaging. His W (Rune Prison) only roots enemies when they are already marked with Flux; otherwise, it just slows them by 50%.
Basic Lane Phase Skirmish
Help Ryze secure farm safely during the early game by providing vision control around mid lane and tracking the enemy jungler. Ryze is highly item-dependent and becomes much stronger once he completes his core items.
Lane Phase
When Ryze reaches level 6, position near him when preparing for objectives. His R (Realm Warp) can teleport allies within medium-long range (up to 3000 units), allowing for surprise flanks or quick objective rotations.
Team Fight Late Game
Despite being a mage, Ryze has relatively short range abilities (550 units for his W and E). Position yourself to protect him during team fights, as he needs to get closer to enemies than most mages to deal his full damage.
Team Fight
Coordinate with Ryze to focus priority targets using his E+W combo for reliable root. This creates a perfect opportunity for your team to eliminate high-value targets with layered crowd control.
Skirmish Team Fight
When skirmishing or team fighting, try to position enemies close together. Ryze deals significantly more damage to targets marked with his E (Spell Flux) and can spread this damage to nearby marked enemies for powerful AOE damage.
Team Fight Skirmish
After 25 minutes with several items completed, Ryze becomes extremely powerful with high burst damage. Prioritize protecting him in late-game team fights and create space for him to safely output damage from medium range.
Late Game Team Fight
When using Ryze's R (Realm Warp) to teleport, you'll be briefly rooted, disarmed, silenced, and untargetable for 0.75 seconds after arriving. Plan your abilities and positioning accordingly for the moment you regain control.
